This is parked near my daughter’s school. I had never seen one before this. It’s a Bluebird Wanderlodge. Remember those old Bluebird school buses we used to ride on? Well, the Blue Bird Company decided in the 1960s to build motor homes on that bus chassis. The first ones had a Ford super duty V8 gasoline engine, but later models were diesel powered. These things were not budget RVs. These were meant to be high end, and they were bought by high end clientele, including presidents, singers, and dictators. Used ones are listing for anywhere from $40k up to close to a quarter mill.

Kinja'd!!!

The one I spotted drove to Texas from Oregon, according to the plates, and you can see it’s brisling with a bunch of stuff, including what looks like a fancy antenna. I didn’t get to see the inside, but I did find !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of a guy showing his 1983. It’s so 80s-tastic.

Kinja'd!!!

What does Oppo think? Is this the most Jalop RV you can get? I mean, it’s even brown.

If you drove it onto the grass nobody would ever see it, perfect camoflauge

Good point. Great for extended stakeouts. Or squatting.

It needs a fold out stop sign and then it would be perfect.

It’s pretty Jalop, but it’s also very exclusive, which is only Jalop to a point. A Flxible Vistaliner or ‘50s Flxible Clipper conversion is a little less exclusive and has potential to be janky or have really demented things from the conversion, so...

I would also give mad points to a GMC New Look with a partial pickup bed conversion.

(I turned into a bus snob so slowly I never noticed.)

A true bus snob always sits in the back, which makes it difficult if you’re the driver.

These things are awesome. I’ve seen a few, many years ago, and didn’t realize then how awesome they were. Just a solid, solid chassis that’s been proven over decades. Everything should be so robust...

Robust, yes, but I do wonder how the suspension, and NVH insulation is on them. I’d assume they’d have to be way different on these vs the buses, even though the chassis are the same.

That has to be the coolest dashboard bar none (even if the ergonomics are a nightmare).

Or miles per gallon?

Seriously, this site says they average 5 to 8 mpg, not broken out by engine type.

So, driving it here from Oregon was not for the faint of wallet.

plus they’re likely to have 2-stroke Detroit engines, which is the only proper powerplant for a ‘50s-’80s bus.

that is, just so long as the engine is way out back. otherwise, you get the problematic early compact 4-strokes like this:

Fail.
